Babcock Students To Compete For N10m In Annual Tech Week Hackathon

Babcock University is set to host its second annual Babcock Tech Week (BTW), a programme designed to foster student innovation, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and industry engagement.

The event will feature competitions, career fairs, and panel discussions aimed at providing students with opportunities to showcase their skills and connect with leading organisations.

The event is scheduled to hold from March 22 to 28, 2026, under the theme "Tethered — Connected Across Disciplines", highlighting the importance of collaboration between technology, finance, health, and society in solving complex challenges.

Organised by the Babcock University Computer Club (BUCC) in collaboration with the Finance Students Association (FINSA), Google Developer Groups Babcock (GDG on Campus, Babcock), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Babcock (IEEE, Babcock), BTW 2026 will be open to students from all faculties as well as participants from outside the university.

At the centre of the programme is the Tethered Hackathon and Pitchathon, which carries a total prize pool of N10 million.

According to the Convener, Dunmade Majuyi, the first-place winner will receive N4,000,000, second place N2,000,000, and third N1,000,000, along with vertical and technical excellence awards.

"Every competing team must include at least one student from outside the School of Computing — a structural requirement that ensures the competition rewards genuine cross-disciplinary thinking, not just technical execution," he added.

The week will also feature a full-day Career Fair on March 24, providing organisations with direct access to Babcock's student talent pool while giving students exposure to internship and employment opportunities.

Panel discussions will cover topics such as Africa's Digital Future, Funding Innovation, and Capital Markets & Venture Ecosystems, with confirmed speakers including CEO, Open Access Data Centres, Ayotunde Coker; CEO, Arravo, Ayo Adegboye; Technical Lead, Paystack, Ifeoluwa Sobogun; and Chairman, CreditRegistry, Fatumata Coker.

Head of Partnerships and External Relations, BTW 2026, Obata Onyelukachukwu, said, "There is a generation of builders at Babcock that the industry hasn't fully met yet. BTW is where that meeting happens."

"The organisations that will show up aren't just doing students a favour — they're getting early access to the most exciting talent pipeline in this country, before it belongs to anyone else."

Industry partners include Arravo Technology, Open Access Data Centres, Blue Marina Asset Management, Access Holdings, CreditRegistry, and Cordros Securities, with more confirmations expected.
